RESTORATION OF OIL PAINTINGS WATER COLOURS & GILT FRAMES
DICK POWELL
Studied under the instruction of well known restorer Roger Hammersley in 1986.
Over 20 years practical experience working for galleries, auction houses and the general public.

OIL PAINTINGS
Removing surface dirt accumulated over the years caused by air pollution, i.e. smoke from open fires and nicotine from cigarettes, etc..

Removing old discoloured varnish without affecting the painting itself. This will bring the picture back to its original colours.

Repairing holes and small tears by patching on the back of the canvas.

Lining ( or re-lining as it is often termed) is necessary if the painting has severe damage, i.e. large tears or flaking paint. This strengthens and preserves the painting after which the remaining scars
will be filled, re-touched and varnished.
No oil painting whatever the damage is beyond redemption as can be seen from the examples shown later.
GILT FRAMES
Damaged gilt frames can be cleaned and repaired with mouldings taken from undamaged areas and recast. Sympathetic re-gilding can
be taken to blend in with the existing colour of the frame.

WATER COLOURS
Minor damage such as foxing marks caused by damp or light stains can be cleaned. The restoration of any major damage can be carried
out by a specialist in paper conservation.
